Chelsea have significantly struggled since the appointment of Graham Potter and now a reliable source has made a claim on who Todd Boehly could appoint to improve performances over the remainder of the season.

Who could replace Potter at Chelsea?

beIN Sports presenter Richard Keys has made an extraordinary claim, backing the Chelsea owner to sack Potter and reunite the club with much-loved AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho.

Keys claimed live on air:

“Jose Mourinho is a former Chelsea manager who is enormously popular with the crowd, he’s the most successful individual the club have ever employed.

“He’s a populist, Boehly, he wants to give them something to get excited about.

“The experiment with Potter has failed miserably, so that’s got to change. [If I’m Boehly], what do I need to do now? I need the get-out-of-jail-free card: Mourinho.”

Should Boehly hire Jose Mourinho?

Chelsea have only taken two wins from their last 15 games under the former Brighton and Hove Albion boss and after a humbling defeat to bottom-of-the-table Southampton on Saturday, there is no doubt that the English manager is treading on a tightrope heading into his next fixture against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The Blues also suffered a defeat in their Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund last week which could see the club knocked out prematurely if they do not recover away from home next month and are currently ten points adrift from a qualifying spot in the competition next season at present.

As a result, bringing back Mourinho could be an incredibly ambitious move from Boehly should the American owner find himself unable to back Potter to bring Chelsea back to life in the remaining 15 league outings.

Appointing the Portuguese boss for his third stint at Stamford Bridge would certainly pull at the heartstrings of the supporters but would also provide them with a manager who is tenacious, experienced and unrivalled in his ability to bring success to Stamford Bridge.

The legendary 60-year-old manager won three Premier League titles, three League Cups and one FA Cup during his time with the club and continues to be one of the most impressive coaches in the world, immortalising his legacy by winning Roman’s first major European trophy in the Conference League last season and becoming the first manager to win all five European trophies.

Crucially, Mourinho has a much better record this season with a 51.61% win ratio and 1.74 points average per game, whilst Potter has a 36% win ratio which is the lowest of any Chelsea manager since Glen Hoddle.

With that being said, whilst it might not be a relatively realistic prospect for Chelsea to bring back Mourinho there is no doubt that it would be a popular move, one that could put Boehly firmly in the good books of the supporters amidst this tough time for the club.
